March 7, 6:30 P.M. — WORLD WAR II AND THE MEN FROM OCONTO’S COMPANY C
The Oconto County Historical Society will present its monthly Speaker Series Program at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2024, in the Beyer Home and Carriage Museum meeting room at 915 Park Avenue, in Oconto, Wisconsin.
The evening’s program will spotlight the men from Oconto’s Company C, and the part these soldiers played in World War II
In 1942, in the early stages of World War II’s South Pacific Campaign against Japanese forces, our young men from Oconto’s Company C had orders to complete the elimination of Japanese forces in Buna, New Guinea. Military intelligence had expected this to be a relatively easy task. However, what these men encountered was to become one of the most difficult and grueling battles in history.
The program presenter will be David Retzlaff. David has been a portrayer of one of the soldiers from Oconto’s Company C, in a recent Oconto County Historical Society cemetery walk, “If Tombstones Could Talk.” Currently, Dave is the team leader in constructing the Beyer Home and Carriage Museum’s Military History Exhibit.
He will share the story of Company C with the aid of a news article written by Bernice Blank, a past writer for the Oconto County Reporter.
Dave’s presentation will touch your heart and remind you of all the sacrifices made on our behalf.
The program is free of charge and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
