Exhibit Update
Over the past 20 years, significant archaeological discoveries about the Old Copper Complex have been integrated into our new exhibits. These exhibits highlight the lifeways of ancient people who lived in northeast Wisconsin thousands of years ago. The burials at the Oconto Site are directly tied to the prehistoric ancestors of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin.
According to American Archaeology (Spring 2025, Vol. 29 No. 1), recent evidence suggests the Copper Culture people were not only the earliest known metallurgists in the western hemisphere—but potentially the earliest in the world.
The Oconto Site is one of only a few such locations in the Upper Great Lakes region, and the only one with a museum dedicated to telling the story of these remarkable prehistoric people.
About the Museum
The Copper Culture Museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day, and by appointment for small groups in the spring and fall.
It is housed in a beautifully restored, intricately bricked farmhouse built over 100 years ago by Charles Werrebroeck in the Old World Belgian style. The preserved Oconto-milled maple floors and the double-sided fireplace—now featuring hand-painted panels by local artist Bruce Retzlaff—offer visitors a truly unique experience.
The Museum is operated under the auspices of the Oconto County Historical Society.
