Oconto County Historical Society 14th Annual Cemetery Walk – September 9/11

The Oconto County Historical Society will sponsor its 14th Annual Cemetery Walk “If Tombstones Could Talk” on September 9th, 10th, and 11th.

The evenings of September 9th and 10th will find the walk being staged outdoors at the Oconto Catholic Cemetery, 3024 N. River Road, Oconto, at 6:00 p.m.

On the evening of September 11th, the program will be presented indoors in the John B. LeMay Auditorium at Oconto Senior High School, 1717 Superior Avenue, Oconto, at 6:00 p.m.

The individuals who will be portrayed this year and have their stories told include: Henrietta “Etta” Couillard, a long-time teacher at St. Joseph’s Catholic School and a Couillardville resident; Thomas Bake, well-known and successful in the jewelry business, owning stories in Oconto, Green Bay and Naples, Florida; Sister Mary Chrysantha, a Sister Superior at St. Joseph’s Cathoic School in the 1880s; Dr. David Moriarty, a Civil War veteran and early pioneer Oconto physician; Albert Klozotsky, Sr. member of Oconto Company M and early member of the Oconto Fire Department; and Marie Blake, high-spirited Oconto resident, supporter of community and family and mother to seven children, including Thomas.

Tour-goers will be led in groups through the cemetery by guides for the outdoor walks. Those attending the outdoor performances are urged to wear comfortable shoes as the tour requires an amount of walking, sometimes on uneven ground. You may also wish to bring a flashlight and insect repellant. The indoor performance is designed for people who may find it difficult to walk in the cemetery but is open to everyone.

Tickets are $12 per person and will be sold at the Beyer Home and Carriage Museum through September 1st. Please note that the Museum is closed on Tuesdays. If any tickets remain unsold after September 1st, they will be available for sale at Roberts Hometown Hardware, 919 Main Street, Oconto. In addition, remaining unsold tickets will be available for sale prior to each evening’s performance.

There are a limited number of tickets for the performances and tickets sell out fast. Complimentary refreshments will be served to tour-goers at the cemetery on the evenings of September 9th and 10th, and in the cafeteria of the Oconto High School following the performance on September 11th. In the event of inclement weather on September 9th or 10th, the performances will be moved indoors to the Oconto High School Auditorium.
